Category Archives: Pic of the Week

Pic of the Week, new in 2012, is proving a successful strategy for organising my chaotic array of photos and spending some quality time with the GIMP image editor. It’s more of a sandbox than a showcase as I’m tending to pick photos that present some sort of challenge to work on, rather than the ‘ooh aah’ shots :) Should build up a range of image styles here and will probably dabble in some quirky & experimental stuff from time to time.

Enjoy.

Phormium tenax

close up of new zealand flax

Carrying on the exploration of nature's simple forms up close, this week's image of a flax was taken in morning sun. The black background was a result of lighting conditions, aperture and shutter speed. I've added some vignetting but hot sure if I'm completely sold on the post processing, will see if it grows on me.

Taraxacum – winds of change [pic]

dandelion flower head

Carrying on last week's study of Taraxacum, this image captures the same Dandelion a day later. Note how the form resonates so unmistakably with existential notions of Being and Essence. Was this 'flower' ever truly complete? Is it now not a 'Flower' or it's true nature somehow made concrete in the inevitability of change?

Milford Sound Flax [Pic]

Flax in flower, Milford Sound, NZI love the colour and form of flax in flower. This snapshot of Phormium tenax was taken on a rainy afternoon in Milford Sound. According to Wikipedia, Milford Sound has a mean annual rainfall of 6,813 mm (268 in) and rains on average 182 days a year. It's known as the wettest inhabited place in [...]

White Hill [pic]

White Hill Wind Farm, Southland, NZ

Typical rural NZ featuring rolled hay bails, tractors, and the White Hill wind farm just visible in the background. Taken from Mossburn in Southland. Nothing too spectacular about this shot, but pleasant enough kind of feel to it. Conditions at the time were pretty dull so I've experimented with a slightly retro analogue feel to this version.
