‘Call of the Ocean’ Premiere – NCMA, June 2021

Here’s the premiere of the 2020 SOUNZ Community Commission piece, ‘Call of the Ocean’ – a collaboration between composer Jessie Leov and Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus performed at the Nelson Centre for Musical Arts (NCMA) on the 19 June 2021.

It was a real privilege to follow along with the development of this piece and be involved in recording the first performance. Most of the footage was shot on a GH5 with a second Panasonic camera at the back for another perspective.

Audio is from a couple of Zoom recorders placed each side of centre stage. Unfortunately we discovered fairly late in the scheme of things that the usual choir recording arrangement – which uses high quality mics set up by experienced technicians – was not available for the concert, so we had to make do with a last-minute set up. The resulting audio quality is not fantastic but surprisingly good all things considered.
